Long and curly hair! [help]?

I have a TON of long, curly, thick, frizzy hair. I have tried almost everything to tame it. Whenever I wear it down it always frizzes, then I have to put it up on a ponytail! Is there anything that ACTUALLY works on thick curly hair?? I want some kind of gel, or frizz control, something that enables me to wear it down for the whole day. I don't want to straighten it!

no offense to the girl down there but if you don't brush your hair it will get matted and seriously you DON'T want that. i have the exact same hair as you it sounds like. think. supper curly.. and frizzy :[ i tried just about everything but then i came across this line of shampoos conditioners and hair styling products. its called DevaCurl. it has a light green label and they sell it at salons but if they don't in your area then check them out online. i swear it tamed my hair and i love it! i can finally wear my hair down and i can even let it air dry sometimes. which was never the case, before i would blow dry it and have to watch it until it was totally dry to make sure it wasn't frizzy and it always frizzed anyway. i don't know if being Latino has anything to do with it but try it out. and if it doesn't work look up this really upscale curly hair shampoo called OUIDAD. i found this stuff in an ophra magazine. it is a salon made just for curly hair they have different lines if your hair is dyed or really dry. i hear its amazing they have a website were you can blog and everything.. ouidad.com. i haven't tried their products yet because they are expensive. but if you try it and it works you have to let me know. but until then try Devacurl, and see if it works for you as it did for me.

Hey, I don't know why but I always have these little tiny hairs coming out of my head. I don't use any machines like blow dryers or anything like that. But I do use gel and I comb my hair with a comb. I comb it down and I use gel to bring my hair down. But everytime I comb it, there are a bunch of little tiny hairs standing up which I can't put down. Even people with perfectly healthy hair have little flyawyas, they're just teenie, so you can't see them in pictures (or they're photo-shopped out). Not much you can really do to prevent them; just take good care of your hair as you already are.

I have hot rollers, normal rollers, those foamy things, a curling iron, a straightner( people say you can curl your hair with that), hairspray, gel, mousse..

You'll need the hairspray and curling iron.

Take the curling iron and wrap your hair around it. Instead of dropping it and moving on like you usually would while curling your hair, pull it off of the iron so that it's still in a circle and pin it to your head with bobby pins. Do this all over your head and let it cool down. Spray it with hairspray while it's still up and still let it sit. Then slowly and carefully take them down. Turn your head over and kind of shake your head and muss up your hair with your hands. It'll separate it out and make it seem 'messy' without pulling out the curl.

don't ever use mouse, gel or hairspray- hairspary should only be used lighty as a finishing spray. Let your hair air dry ( i find it best to shower at night and let it dry over night) it brings out the waves- then take a curling enhancer i use biloage and love it! and smooth it lightly over your hair to fight frizz. than take a little more, spread evenly in your palms, and scrunch from your bottom up. then if you need use some texture twist to get some of the unwavy pieces and then finish with a light coat of hairspray- the finish is natural, light, and not crunchy at all- and it takes less than 8 minutes! let me know if you need any further details, or product information- the product you use makes a big difference!

I have no idea where this stuff came from. It was like I'd forgotten to rinse the conditioner out of my hair! It was kindof a combination of waxy and sticky, and it was only at the roots, and only around the crown of my head, not the sides or the back. It started about 4 days ago.

I baby my hair - I only use mousse or gel once in a while (probably less than 10 times a year). I don't dye, I don't blow dry, I haven't changed shampoo or conditioner. I tried shampooing three times in the same shower, and not putting conditioner in except at the ends. The only thing I can think of is that I have hard water at my house, but I've lived here for almost 6 months!

Very weird. I finally solved the problem by shampooing with FastOrange (yes, the stuff car mechanics use to get grease off their hands!)

It worked beautifully, but I'm clueless as to what caused the problem! No one at the hair salon had any ideas. Anyone else had this experience?

No idea what it IS, but use a clarifying shampoo instead of FastOrange lol :-) Use it once or twice a week and it shouldn't happen again. Usually that's product buildup or conditioner (like you said) that wasn't washed out well, or hair spray that got greasy from your scalp (I DO have experience with that happening).

This somethimes happenes to me. Make sure to wash out all your shampoo out of your hair, because that can build up and clump. It gets really greasy if theres anymore products in your hair.

Make sure to feel through your hair after your shower. If your feel anything soapy or sticky, just rinse your hair out one more time, and it should all be fixed.

Its probably just sebum which is usually heavier during puberty and other hormonal activity, but it could also be mild dandruff.

Most people think dandruff is dry flakes, but that is actually dry scalp and not dandruff. Any good conditioner will fix that., but dandruff is actually a sticky oily or 'waxy' deposit, sometimes with little gray or yellow particles.

I would certainly ask a dermatologist about it.

I am a little concerned about the fastorange drying out your hair, but if it works, hey, perhaps you are on to something.

my hair is very picky about what shampoo i use and if i use suave shampoo for more than one bottle i get that waxy build up you're talking about and it's because the shampoo is cheap and made with a waxy base. most people would never notice it. i have really picky hair and i treat it the same way you do. if i use any brand of shampoo other than "my brand" for more than one or two bottles it will do the same thing. "my brand" by the way is biolage normalizing shampoo and detangling solution(conditioner)

You could get an iron cleaning spray, but it might be hard to find as I've only seen it at my local beauty supply. I suggest using rubbing alcohol on a cloth. Make sure the cloth is well saturated and that the iron is hot. After I straighten my hair out, I put a little bit more of the product on the ends of my hair where it is the driest.

When you straighten your hair with a flat iron it usually holds its straightness for at least a few days, about three whilst washing your hair every day.

Adding water will probably make it go frizzy though.

You can get waves if you use gel and scrunch your hair.

You have to take sections of hair in a hand covered with gel, grabbing them from the roots, and squeeze outwards.

The smaller the section the tighter the curls.

I know for a fact that this works if you have short hair and want beach waves and supposedly it works to give waves to longer hair too, but I can't say for sure.

The 'flat' effect you get when using straighteners or blow drying is caused by manipulating the hairs hydrogen bonds which can easily be reformed by heat or water.

If you add product or water after applying heat you are just reforming any bonds you have changed with the heat source.

If you wish to achieve a straight look with extra hold you are best to apply product to damp hair before drying with a hair dryer, when dry use the straighteners on your hair in small sections. There are also some good humdity sprays on the market that you can spritz as a finish to tame any lasting fly-away ends.

If your not willing to use product or curlers in your hair then your kinda stuck. The one thing you can do is twirl your hair in pieces like a pin curl, bobby pin it in and let it either air dry (depends how much time you have) or use a dryer. This will give you something other than straight. But don't expect anything to last without some kind of product.

I've recently got my hair cut. It's not that short but it's not that long either, if you know what I mean. I can't put it in a pony tail but it's long enough that I would like to and need to put it up sometimes. Like for work. well for starters a tight pony tail is way out of fashion'so wat i recommend is getting some bobby pins and taking sections,seperate and then pull them together in a pony tail andto top it off you a really sparkly or big clip like if you go to frys market place they have lotts of verieties that arent like those cheap clips that hurt ur head.. and also putting a pony tail in could make your face look bare so maybe try to get some layered bangs!! or better yet put it half up( the way i told you how to put in a pony, u know with the bobby pins)and staightening or curling the botem.... hope i helped oh ps you can also put a head band in then tease the crown of your head to add volume and glitz, frys, im telling you has the cutest hair excessories

I dont think they are that good for the hair. hairspray and gl can lave the hair feeling sticky, so when you try and brush through the hair, it is very stiff and you can end up breaking the hair.

these sort of hair products weaken the hair by making it all stiff and hardened, so in answer to your question, i dont think they are that good for your hair, but if you use them very occasionally instead of everyday, it may not be a problem.

It looks like you have naturally curly hair. You should embrace what you have naturally and choose a style that will be easy to fix. All the styles you chose where the hair is flat, or straight, will be a lot of work for you to try to maintain. Go with your curls, you will look much better if you aren't trying to force a hairstyle. If you try to go with spikes, you will probably still end up with some curls. I say do the longer, surfer dude curly look.

O.k. my reponse is easy and its very cheap might I add..................Plug the curling iron in and turn it to the highest setting leave on for about 10 minutes on high and then unplug and get stainless steel or copper(what you may use to clean dirty pots and pans with) and wet so it starts bubbling and start scrubbing but continuosly dipping steel or copper in cool water to prevent your fingers from burning. But trust me this works and no harsh chemicals needed. Just be sure to let dry for about 24 or more hours before using again or giving it back to your friend.

Oh and for some reason hairspray seems to add better shine if you use it before curling...............So I understand!!!!!

This is going to sound a bit odd but it really works....use oven cleaner! You know...the kind you spray out and it foams? Put it on the curling iron, let it set for 5 to 10 minutes depending on how dirty it is and then wipe/scrub it off with a wash cloth. Just be sure to wash the barrels really good with hot soapy water when your done....two times just to be safe. And viola'! Hope this helps! :)

sometimes i use a little olive oil. you can get those spray cans..just the cooking stuff. only use it on the top of your head and go easy cos if you spray it on the longer stuff it will make it look greasy. smooth it down then hairspray like normal. are you using medium strength hairspray? i like that vo5 stuff but sometimes you gotta experiment

i would suggest either using a pomade, but i you feel that a pomade would even be too greasy. the best thing would be to use a serum. it is a clear liquid that adds softness and shine to the hair. just apply a drop or two onto your hand rub it in a little bit so that you dont glob it onto your hair. and just use both hands to evenly distribute the product through out your hair... when i am at the salon and adding the finishing touches to a clients hairstyle, and a few stubborn strands that are sticking up, i either use pomade or serum using the same method i described above or i would spray hairspray on my hand rub it in with both hands but still leave my hands a little wet and then pull the strands down or rub the hair flat. it works! you should try these easy techniques!

i think u should use a straightening cream before u straighten. just after u wash it, put it in while its stillwet/damp and blow dry or straighten. if ur not gonna blow dry it, i suggest letting it completely dry first, cuz damp hair may also be the cause of the frizzz. :]

1) What you should do is first straighten your hair. Then pull it into a high, tight pony tail. Then take a rubberband, put some conditioner on it and tie it tightly around your pony tail. This will prevent frizz.

2) I would put it in both times- extra protection!

3) One word- Chi Straightner!

4) Don't- you have to have super thin, straight hair.

5) Braids

6) 3 braids- divide your hair into thirds, (2 braids on the side, 1 in the back) and put a little water into your hair. Sleep on it

7) You should wash your hair every other day. Use a Chi straightner

anova way u cud curl ur hair is buy geten straightners and twistin ur hair around the straithners and pulling it down untill the hair cums out and itll be nurled or waves depenind on how much u go around the str8ners with ur hair ;)....tip ur head down hold all ur hair togeva and scrunch it upp into ur fist then get ur difuser (if u dnt have one buy it) and put ur scrunched up hair in the difusser then let it dry in that postion for a minute then move the diffuser round ur head so all the areas dry then turn the difuuser off after 3 minutes scrunch ur hair back up in ur fist roll it up and hold it with a hair clip leave it liek that for an hour or hour and half ....dry the out side bits of ur hair if still wet then after that 1hr -1hr and 30 mins take out ur clip and ur hair shuid be big and curl :P

U can try perming ur hair or even rollers. After washing ur hair, put rollers in them for 3-4 hours for the hair to get curls. However i must warn you that curly hair are really difficult to maintain and control. Be thankful u have straight hair. i Have curly hair too.

if you hair doesnt have a natural curl and isn't chemically processed. then you wouldnt need the rollers. but if it is....you need rollers and a good setting lotion. I would suggest lottabody. purple and white bottle for around 3 bucks at walmart. or a nice clear gel. I prefer a thick one. elasta qp glaze is a good one.

you can use magnetic rollers or flexirods. flexirods would give you more of a spiral. roll your hair one way with the rods and close it the other way so that they wont be crappy when you take them down. if you have thick hair that isnt naturally curly or wavy, then i would suggest lots of the smaller ones. same as if you use magnetic ones.

only take your rollers out when your hair is completely dry. although you dont have to do this on wash day. you can do it any other day or night but take your rollers out when your hair is dry of water and product.

if you use sponge rollers, get some papers that go on the roller to keep it from drying your hair out. the beauty supply store has them. ask for them if you don't see them.

Depending on the length of your hair a simple trick to achieving waves would be to put your hair in braids (remember not make these braids too tight or you will damage your hair.) after you wash and towel dry My daughter does this at night before bed.. In the morning when its dry , you remove the braids you will have soft waves . use a pick not a hairbrush to comb the soft waves. You can also use a little gel or mousse . If you find your hair is too wavy you can just wash it and the waves will disappear. You can adjust the amount of braids you put in your hair as to how much wave you want. This is the easiest and simplest way to achieve wavy hair and its not permanent. It still gives you the versatility to wear your hair straight or wavy. Good luck :)

wash your hair. then part it in little 1'' by 1'' squares. braid the hair in each square, tie a rubber band at the end of each braid. spray some hair spray on your hair and let it air dry or sit under a drier. then when it is dry, take the rubber bands of and undo the braids. it should be wavy
