Can I dye my hair if it has some product in it?

I want to dye my hair tonight so it will be done for tomorrow night. However, I do have some straightening gel in my hair right now (just a bit, nothing goopy). I usually try to wash my hair and not put any product, then dye the next day. I have always heard you should not dye on freshly washed hair, as hair has no natural oils and can get dried out. Should I just dyed on my hair even with the product, or just go ahead and wash it before dying? Any help please.

PS. I have hair that is dyed dark brown but it is faded (last coloring was 2 months ago). It is still darker brown but I will be redying it dark brown to refresh color.

I get my hair proffessionally hightlighted a bright bright red every 5 weeks ( for a year straight now), and my hair is dark brown. I use a texturizer(pomade) and hairspray in my hair every day, and when I go to the salon, she always highlights it first, then washes it, then cuts it. Most products do say to use on hair that has not recently been washed. The directions on the box would tell you if you needed to wash it before hand, but I don't. It depends on the coloring product, but as I said, my stylist never washes it first, and it comes out great. Good luck!

You should wash it first, then dye it. Good luck!!

do not wash first. the product in it isn't going to make a difference. go ahead and good luck :)

Don't ever wash your hair first, unless you plan on waiting 24 hours before coloring. Yes, you can color with some product in there. Things like pomades and waxes you cannot effectivly color over, but hairspray, dry gel, and mousse are okay to color over. just brush your hair thoroughly first.

It should be ok. I've dyed my hair with different products in it everytime I've dyed it. I've had straightening balm, curling spray, texturizing mousse, and texture cream in my hair at different times I've dyed it (not all products at once I swear!) and it always came out great. I have also been instructed many times by my stylist not to dye on freshly washed hair. It won't take the color as well and can damage your hair.

When in doubt...wash it out!!

If you wash your hair gently... not scrubbing and irritating your scalp you will be fine. Be sure to dry your hair well after you wash it to at least 70% dryness. (If your hair is full of water, it cannot accept the color)

I'm sure it would be fine to color over the product in your hair, but why take that chance.

I always dye my hair with product in it. It seems to work just fine.

Good luck
