my hair is mostly flat and i want a lot more volume to it. i want to know how to back comb my hair. i get most of the concept and all but should my hair be dry or damp? should comb it fast or slow? should i use hairspry or gel? was my hair in cold/ warm water?
i just need step by step dirrections if possible.

blow dry your hair to make it very dry. then take sections of your hair and take a metal comb with alot of teeth and comb from your scalp, towards your scalp and move to the end of your hair til its all back combed

its really easy once u get it. Do it wiv a thin tooth comb on dry hair. Section the piece of hair u want 2 backcomb if doing a large section or whole head work from bottom top. Neva back comb the very top layer of hair it will just look messy.
To actually backcomb.
take section of hair, lift away from head. comb about two inches from root, getting closer to the root as you go. Instead of combing in direction of hair (ie down towars floor) go against it combing towards head.
Once finished sort the hair so there is no knots or messy bits.

if your hair is short, backcombing is not going to help. do everything else though. hair should be dry, with a volumizing mousse applied to the roots and dry upside down. you'll be combing slow at first until you get it down. you are NOT combing up and down. the temp of the water matters not one bit, except really hot water just isn't good for your hair. i wouldn't backcomb the entire head, it just looks silly. choose one area that you want to highlight. usually the crown or top of your head. flip all of the hair forward and section out a piece about the same size you would use if you were curling or flattening it. holding the ends up high away from your head and using a fine tooth comb. comb only 1/3 the length the section next to your head. comb in an arc from tips to roots. kind of hard to explain. comb only in one direction. do this two or three times. drop this piece down to the back of your head and section out the next piece closest to the front of your head. remember no up and down, only down, only a few times, and in an arc not straight. when your done with that section. pull all the hair back to it's original position and smooth out some of the hair over the top, more if you're too poofy and hairspray, but don't go crazy you don't want to weigh it down.

ok if you wear your hair straight but you just want loads of volume -wash your hair as normal keep the conditioner away from the roots then turn your head upside down put some volumizing mousse into it the dry it off completely while your hair is upside down .then brush it out and put your straightener through it .take a section about 2inchs wide 1/2 inch thick on the crown and backcomb it fast .take about 3-4 of those sections then put plenty of hairspray on it while its standing up, once that is done get a soft brush an gently brush it out into th shape you want it good luck

set your hair, leave on for awhile it has to be dry. back comb takes a lot of time if you don't know how to back comb. it doest not matter slow or fast. use a 7 inc comb/small teeth. Good luck!
